Effects of Lead Poisoning on Children's Learning

Essential Question:
What can we learn about lead poisoning that could help target efforts to decrease the lead poisoning rate in Rhode Island?

In this data story, we examine children sub-populations who might be more exposed to lead poisoning.

Introduction: Lead as a Neurotoxicant

Lead is a known neurotoxicant that has been shown to cause significant and permanent damage due to its detrimental effects on the central nervous system.

In particular, many studies have shown that children with long-term exposure to lead during their developmental years demonstrate lowered cognitive and fine motor skills and difficulties with emotional regulation. Not surprisingly, lead poisoning is linked to a decline in children's performance at school and a higher likelihood of behavioral issues.
